The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 Model of Ease and Beauty
Recognized by its simple construction, accent of balance over symmetry, and absence of ornamental elements, the International Style is accepted by many as one if not the only dominant style of modern furniture design. And one creation that has aided in paving the way for the recognition of the International Style is the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4.
One of the most popular furniture creations by the Swiss-French architect/ designer Le Corbusier, the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 is a chaise lounge or French long chair implemented in the International Style. It was made by Le Corbusier in 1928 in cooperation with designer Charlotte Perriand, and is the product of his experimental jobs into furniture design. The model used for as interior furniture for the Villa Church, Le Corbusier’s architectural project in the city of Paris.
The Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4 can be more or less separated into three fractions: the lower steel base, the curved frame at the center, and the blend seat and backrest with a matching headroll cushion on top. The bottom of the LC4 chaise lounge is completed from flat and tubular steel and painted with a black matte enamel finish. Later versions of the chaise lounge have also added plastic tips at the ends of the bottom to repel scratches.
The center frame of the Le Corbusier Chaise Lounge LC4, on the other hand, is from the same element as the bottom but is slightly curved and coated with glossy chrome plating. The frame’s curved form allows the chair to tilt back effortlessly, as the frame is able to move against the independent base at the bottom. And to keep things relaxed the seat/backrest and head roll is packed with soft polyurethane and coated with black leather, although re-editions are now also able in other upholstery options such as pony skin and canvas.
